A 25 year-old federal contractor was arrested on Monday on federal charges by the Department of Justice for stealing Top Secret information and providing it to The Intercept.

The Daily Caller reported that the Department of Justice accused Reality Leigh Winner of “removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet.” The complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Georgia, states that Winner has worked for Pluribus International since February 13 and that she held a Top Secret clearance.

The complaint states that on May 9, “Winner printed and improperly removed classified intelligence reporting, which contained classified national defense information from an intelligence community agency, and unlawfully retained it.”

Several days later, the complaint states that Winner transmitted the information through mail to an online news outlet.

FBI agents interviewed Winner at her home on Saturday, where she admitted that “she intentionally identified and printed” classified information “despite not having a ‘need to know,’ and with knowledge that the intelligence reporting was classified.”

“Winner further admitted removing the classified intelligence reporting from her office space, retaining it, and mailing it from Augusta, Georgia, to the news outlet, which she knew was not authorized to receive or possess the documents,” the complaint read.

On Monday, the Intercept published an article based on stolen NSA documents containing Top Secret information about Russia’s attempts to hack into voter registration systems prior to the election last November. The documents shared by The Intercept  “appeared to be folded and/or creased, suggesting they had been printed and hand-carried out of a secured space.”

The agency immediately conducted and internal audit and found that six people had printed the documents, including Winner.

“A further audit of the six individuals’ desk computers revealed that WINNER had e-mail contact with the News Outlet. The audit did not reveal that any of the other individuals had e-mail contact with the News Outlet,” the complaint stated.
